What is a proxy? A complete guide for beginners
Understand what a proxy is, how it actually works, and the main types — residential, datacenter, and mobile — before picking one for your project.
Proxy is a term that shows up in nearly every technical guide about automation, data collection, or digital marketing, but it's rarely explained from scratch. In simple terms: a proxy is a middleman between your computer (or script) and the site/service you're accessing. Instead of connecting directly, your request goes through the proxy first, which forwards it using its own IP address — the destination only ever sees the proxy's IP, never yours.
How a proxy works, in practice
The flow is easy to picture in three steps: (1) you configure your browser, script, or automation tool to send traffic through the proxy, providing host, port, and credentials; (2) the proxy receives that request and forwards it to the real destination, using its own IP; (3) the response travels back the same path and reaches you as if nothing happened along the way. From the perspective of the site you accessed, the proxy made the request — not you.
The main types of proxy
- Datacenter proxy — an IP hosted on a server, generally fast and cheap, but easy for anti-fraud systems to flag as non-residential, since it doesn't correspond to any real internet carrier.
- Residential proxy — an IP assigned by a real home internet provider, recognized as ordinary user traffic, tends to raise much less suspicion.
- Mobile proxy — an IP from real mobile network infrastructure (the same kind any mobile internet user relies on daily), the type with the lowest block rate on platforms that treat datacenter traffic with distrust.
What a proxy is actually used for
- Data collection (web scraping) and price monitoring at scale, without depending on a single IP that could get blocked at any moment.
- Ad verification and geo-targeting tests — seeing how a campaign or page actually appears to a user in another region.
- Multi-region QA testing, simulating access from different locations without needing physical hardware in each one.
- Managing multiple accounts on the same platform, each with its own IP, without one account's reputation "contaminating" another's.
How to choose the right proxy for your case
Two questions settle most of the decision: first, what IP origin does the destination expect to see (a site geared toward Brazilian consumers reacts better to a local IP than to a foreign datacenter IP); second, whether your use is a one-off (a cheaper shared proxy is usually enough) or recurring and at scale (that's when a dedicated proxy's exclusive reputation earns its extra cost). There's no generic "best proxy" — there's the right proxy for what you're actually trying to do.
